Wordpress Here I Come

Woohoo! wannabes will be happy to know that WP now imports blogs flawlessly. Here is my test blog over at .com to see the results for yourself.

What makes the deal even sweeter is images that are hosted on are still showing up, although it’s been reported that might not be the case further back in the archives. But that will be a small price to pay for a more robust platform as far as I’m concerned.

One of the biggest issues for me migrating over to had been its lackluster performance importing posts and comments. Well, I just tried it again last evening and I’m happy to report that it worked without a hitch.

The other problem that stopped me from considering was losing my URL and all of my . Well now that provides support for custom domains and redirection that is no longer an issue either. So from what it looks at this vantage point there is nothing stopping me from making the move.

This of course won’t happen overnight because I still have to make a custom template, but as far as I can see now it’s only a matter of when it will happen - not if.

For me the breaking point with was over the issue of the comments window not being able to easily maximize in Firefox. Clearly that is a reason why comments have been down here at InstaBloke.

As I explained in my previous post that can easily be worked around by right clicking the link and choosing “open in a new window/tab” or clicking the middle scroll button on the mouse.

However, many readers are still newbies with a computer and don’t know that so I’m losing comments and potential subscribers. Also, I really hate the way comments work and much prefer inline comments so I’m saying adieu to .

(On a side-note, I’m also fed up with being snubbed by upstarts despite the fact that I can run rings around them in the world of , but that’s another matter :)

So , here I come.

P.s.: Will I have to change my name to Word Bloke? Just wondering.

Is it April 1st? Are there hidden cameras? Do I need to arrange to restart my therapy sessions?

I hope the move goes ahead without too many hitches, BB. Are you going the dot.com route, or the dot.org route? Personally, I think the dot.org route will cost you less both financially and in the frustration stakes.

Now what was I saying about Wordpress upstarts? Oh yeah…

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of dot.info. Cool eh?

    Hey BB,

do consider self hosted WP, ie .org

I believe .com is crappier than blogger, as .com doesnt allow you to make a penny - and what’s blogging without some extra change ;)

If you’re concerned about losing PR, here’s a good tut:

And since you have been on custom domain for some time, you can do it and reap results immedeately. Go through the article for further results(disclaimer: clazh.com isnt my site, or of anyone i know…)

    It’s the WordPress upstart again…

Like Sumesh said, it’s the domain name thing. dot.com wordpress might give you more headaches than you care to have - you’ll have a hard time styling a site to your liking without forking out some hard-earned, and even then I don’t know what the limits are.

If you get on to a hosted domain that has WordPress installed, you’ll have a much freer reign - and with a dot.info domain name.

    Okay, I’ll shut up now.

I was afraid this might happen. It’s sad to see the bloke going to Wordpress. I remember reading an article by the bloke once that “we should not give up bight” and since then, I have religiously stuck with Blogger for my www.gamersworldbd.com blog. I know Wordpress is a lot reliable, useful and is the most supported blog management software out there and with tons of widget and customisation software, but if we leave blogger then how is it supposed to get better? We should not give in but continue to fight.

Hi gamers world. I’m just frustrated with Blogger not listening. Google is like some unseen entity out there that has it’s own mind and doesn’t listen to the people. They know that everybody hates their comments system but they just don’t care.

How can you fight some unseen entity? Crikey, you can’t even get a decent response from Blogger if you have a simple question. It’s crazy and very frustrating and I’m fed up.

Why should I continue wasting my time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear when it’s already been made? Even our best hackers like Rammani and the gang have given up.

To me there’s no alternative here. It’s either press on or give up and fold the tent.

OK, Sumesh I will check it out and thanks for the tip. I most definitely will be using a self hosted solution.

    Hi bloke,

Maybe you are right. I can’t even optimise my individual post pages for search engines in blogger. I heard that you get to customise individual pages in WP. And I cannot update my google sitemaps.

But hey, I’m willing to stick with it. Maybe, just maybe, Google might listen to our woes and complaints and make blogger even more better!

Well, if they’re going to get it together they had better hurry up because as soon as I get a decent template I’m outta here.

The reason you can’t optimize post pages or upload a sitemap is because they host it for free. But when you are paying for it that’s another matter.

Oh yes, the other thing I really hate about blogger comments is the inability to edit. That SUCKS!

What? I’ve been away for a week or so and this happens? Whatever next? Hell freezing over?

Enjoy the WordPress experience, BB :)
