Where is the Consistency in Google’s Pagerank?
Not long ago I mentioned that Yahoo was giving me better results than Google. Well apparently Google recently changed it’s algorithms again and it totally killed my blogs.
Where I used to have a pagerank of at least 7 or higher, I checked the other day and didn’t even have a ranking. Ok, I knew that meant Google was still evaluating me, and so I waited. No problem I said to myself, but after checking again today it now says I’m a 1 ??? What the… !!!To say that I’m upset is an understatement. So please pardon my french. The Issue Is:
What will be my rank tomorrow? A 4 perhaps? It’s anybody’s guess at this time. Just follow the bouncing ball. Crikey, the stock market is easier on the nerves.
I’ve heard of blogs being penalized for paid links, Text Link ads but I don’t even use them. So what’s your excuse this time Google?
Maybe there’s a good reason for it or maybe there isn’t, but that’s not the point. The issue is — where’s the consistency Google?
The Dilemma:
We are at the whim of an arbitrary algorithm created by faceless dorks in an overcrowded office cubicle. Even worse, some google goomba might not like the colour of our template and can hand-edit our pagerank into oblivion.
Frankly I am sooooo fed up with Google having a stranglehold on the search engine market.
We play by the rules and where does it get us? We work our a$$ off developing our blogs just so some idiot at Google can come along and arbitrarily pull the rug from underneath us … and for no apparent reason!
I don’t think so.
What To Do?
Unfortunately when you play God long enough you start believing it. If Google really is God then I’m going to have to commit blasphemy and give it the finger.
I’ve already changed my browser’s default search to Yahoo. I suggest you do the same … use anything but Google.
All the more reason why I’m moving off Blogger and away from anything related to Google.
digg_url = http://www.blogbloke.com/where-is-the-consistency-in-googles-pagerank/; Oh, and one more thing. Today I’m officially declaring Google’s pagerank biased and is completely irrelevant to evaluating the worth of a blog. That goes for Technorati and Alexa too.So don’t even bother wasting your time obsessing over it. It’s a joke.“`
UPDATE Oct. 28, 2007: This was the most talked about topic of the week and apparently I’m the one who broke the story. Everyone from Problogger, Andy Beard to TechCrunch is talking about it, and yet not one of them bothered to link to me. Oh well, considering that this was the most dugg post of all (ignore the digg link above — it isn’t working half the time) and that my pagerank is now higher than many of the former a-list snobs out there … here’s sand in your face boyz and girlz

Yeah, PR, Alexa and Technorati are like a bit of circus dancing - you dance according to the tune of the masters.
I honestly wouldn’t have given any of those stats a damn, if it weren’t for TLA, SponsoredReviews and ReviewMe to use them for determining a blog’s price. Yuck!
Besides, all of these systems can be gamed, leaving honest, hardworking guys like you(and me?) to bite the dust, while other high-profile blackhat SEOs hijack all the stats.
Ditto Sumesh. It’s all a crock.
I was recently reading your profile and I was shocked to learn that you are only 15 years old. Either you are very wise and intelligent beyond your years, or you’ve been reading the Bloke too much (or a little of both
Strange! I thought Google and blogger were buddies.
Or so we thought.
I think the algorithm remains mostly unchanged since its Stanford University days.
I stopped relying on page-rank sometime back and began actually reading page-content. That’s probably the time when I became an adult
Atleast the Flock browser has gone in the right direction by having Yahoo as it’s default search engine ! And it gives instant results as you type.
So far, I am very happy with networks like MyBloglog and Bumpzee where you can actually meet real people who have visited your website, interact with them and make friends.
I agree Jaffer, but like Sumesh mentioned above if you’re a professional blogger you are forced to dance according their tune.
I just checked my PR again today and it’s a 5. Still at least 2 points less than I was. Who knows what it will be tomorrow. Our odds are better in Vegas.
Well, as of now ProBlogger and CopyBlogger are hangin at 6
Interestingly, Vincent Flanders is on 7 !
Even more interesting problogger was 7 yesterday. Any bets what tomorrow will bring?
I’m wondering if ReviewMe and others will realize the folly of using page rank. There must be some better way to determine the value of a blog and its advertisements.
Heck, if we can have a (fairly) fair electoral system, you would think we can come up with something for the wild, wild, web (don’t you think).
Thanks for dropping by Terry.
ProBlogger realized his page rangk this morning !
He has a more interesting theory !

Man, I’m such a pioneer! I banished Google from my browser last week.
The worst thing is that I’ve realized I had an addiction to the PageRank bar - every single site I visit, my eyes drift toward the bar, only to discover it’s not there.
As Jaffer said, now I have to rely on the page content to determine if I like the site or not. And that’s not a bad thing.
Let the anti-Google movement commence…
I hear you brother. Not only anti-google, but anti-technorati, anti-alexa and anti-others that use juvenile pageranking methods that are biased and easily exploited.
It’s arrogance and contempt at it’s finest.
Maybe the ghost of altavista will show up at their halloween party
We can only hope.
Don’t know about you guys, but my blog is perfectly fine and no PR penalty. I came across a number of bloggers whose blogs have been penalized for no apparent reason (TLA?).
Anyway, Google is like a monopoly in the search engine market and we all know why we hate monopolies. Stop abusing your powers google!
As for me changing my 10 year old browser default homepage/search enigne Google.com to Yahoo/MSN, that’s another story …..
Google is cooking up something really dirty pissing the whole lot of us webmasters and thats not good.
Buying links is a crime? craps*** (pardon my french too!) I would rather find a better search engine and announce people to use them…
You guys should give Yahoo, Ask.com and Live Search a chance. They’ve closed the gap a lot. Google is no longer the hands-down search option anymore. We’re just used to thinking that way. Old habits…
What you say makes sense.
But how could I ignore Google when it brings me the most visitors?
I think we still have to live with it. At least I have to…
Regards,
Cristi.
Hi Cristian.
Of course when I said that I had my tongue somewhat in my cheek. As long as Google still has a monopoly of SE we are forced to play ball with it. But I think the message is we should be keeping an open mind and using alternative SEs as well.
Google is not the only player out there.
Blog Bloke whatever you said is true. I agree with you completely. but I dont think other search engines can beat Google in near future. Today after reading your post I checked my page rank and it came up to be at 6. Will keep an eye on it to see the results. But i think we should concentrate on blog content more than page rank now. Because Google indexes our sites based on the keyword used. So I dont think that page rank really matters.
Hi there. Thanks for the comments.
With respect to Google continuing it’s dominance on the SE market I can only hope that you’re wrong. Because monopolies in the computer industry are bad and dangerous for everyone.
Congratulations on the “6″ btw, but as we both agree pagerank is basically irrelevant at this point in time.
Who is going to be hurt the most by all this are the former a-listers who monetize their blogs and base their credibility on such ranking systems.
But as for me I’m glad that this happened because ranking systems have been gamed and abused far too long
No, I dont think so, they are already at a better level, all they would do is to down cry the PR downgrade and try to sell advts based on their RSS count and other popular methods…It will hurt you and me, the upcoming bloggers who neither had the traffic, nor the rankings to make a decent living online.
The fact is most so-called a-listers got there in the first place by gaming the system and brown-nosing other a-listers and becoming a part of their blogarchy.
All you have to do is look at how the up-and comers are doing it. They’ve literally hustled their way into the limelight. All it takes is one good recommendation from another a-lister and BOOM — you’ve made it!
Ordinary bloggers will subscribe to a newsfeed based on the so-called credibility of these hustlers. Why do you think they broadcast their stats and are name-dropping all the time?
All you have to do is follow the food chain. It’s not rocket science.
