The Great Web 2.0 Ripoff
Are you a Twit or a Plurk? Do you Twhirl or Twurl? Are your avatars on BlogCatalog or MyBlogBlog? Do you Facebook or MySpace?
So many questions, so little time.
How many accounts do I really need? Will it make me cool or am I a fool? I was just wondering.
Is this Web 2.0 thing really out of control or is it just me? I could go on but thinking about it only gives me a headache. So you tell me.
Take a look at the tube. First there was Survivor. Today there’s a litany of copycat reality shows ranging from the Apprentice to Hogan Knows Best. The lowly sitcom (God rest it’s soul) is now an endangered species. How sad.
Can the same be said for the blog? Come up with a good idea and a million copycats are nipping at your heels. I could go on about my own niche but you already know what I think about that.
Are we to be relegated to forever watching the same old reruns? Shall we act like online barflys and follow the crowd over to the next social network simply because some so-called guru tells us we should? I sincerely hope not.
So where have all the original thinkers gone? Have they moved on to greener pastures? I know that I’ve considered it.
It’s all so confusing. I was told that technology was about innovation. I was told the cream will always rise to the top.
But now I’m having to rethink that theory. It’s looking more like a world of knockoffs than invention. Those who game the system win.
In the real world only dumb animals chase the long tail. Another myth busted? I think so.
Take it from me. The soothsayers and false prophets will lead you astray, so don’t listen to them. The pied-pipers who toot their own horns are full of it, and I think you know what IT is I’m referring to.
Think for yourself and blog on!

Hey Bloke. It wouldn’t be too hard to catalog Web 2.0 as nothing but a train of copy cats and in fact, you would be pretty accurate. But like the free market, the cream of the crop will rise to the top. Sure, there a hundreds of Twitter clones, but Twitter still maintains the majority of users for it’s niche because its the best and it has the mass following.
I agree with your initial line of thought. More innovation would sure be refreshing. I now feel guilty for every blog post I have made where I include a large block quote

What, … me harsh?
I think Twitter is arguably not necessarily the best, but it was the first of its type and the first at bat usually reigns supreme. There are always exceptions of course. Like Altavista and Yahoo for example … damn that Google!

You are right Bloke and there’s a million out there who will agree with you.
Regarding Plurk, I think Justine Ezarik pretty much rounded it up http://tastyblogsnack.com/2008/06/05/plurk/

The whole Web 2.0 thing really is crazy. There are hundreds of social networking and social bookmarking websites, and so many blogs I don’t even think our current number system can count them.
