EAST MEETS WEST at Historic EU Summit. Today old feuds are being set aside as leaders of the new members are sitting down for the first time as equals at the EU’s governing council.
“We used to be the gateway to Europe. … We are now inside the gate,” Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy told revelers Friday in Budapest.”
The EU swelled from 15 nations to 25 by taking in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, along with the Mediterranean nations of Cyprus and Malta. Together, they boost the EU’s population to 450 million.
Watch out America. The new economic union will rival that of the United States.
