Twitter Killers?

Thanks to Kent Newsome (who is a terrific blogger and should be on your newsreader list) I came across a post at Mashable listing the ever-increasing crowd of Twitter copycats such as Pownce.

This is my response:

The more features they keep adding, the more complicated they become and resemble regular blogs. Simplicity and ease of use is supposed to be the charm of micro blogging. So what’s the point? Might as well just keep using the old blog.

Is this just another overcrowded niche for exploitation by the blogpreneurs? Does micro blogging add any value to your blog experience? Let me know what you think.

UPDATE: Scoble and I actually agree on this one.

I’m not sure if it’s safe to call them twitter killers because (I may be mistaken) I believe that the competition has been going out of business. Pownce is a great example of that.
Twitter seems to have the best API, so until that is beat I think twitter will stay strong. Thanks for the post!

One more thing, I clicked on your ‘comments policy’ link and it took me to your error page. Hope that helps

Hi there.

Thanks so much for the heads-up on the broken link. Which is really wierd because it defaulted back to an old link that I had changed some time ago. I must have copied over an older chunk of code and forgot to update the link again.

Yes, since I had written this post Pownce as been pounded into oblivion. I believe they discovered the hard way just what I had predicted. By making Pownce more like a real blog they defeated the whole purpose of micro-blogging and helped put themselves out of business.

Everyone it seems are making apps based on Twitter’s API so it looks like it is THE micro-blogging service and here to stay.
