There Is NO Such Thing as Web 2.0

By April 20th, 2007 5 Comments   Share

I’ll say it again — there is NO such thing as Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 Hype

For anybody who might disagree then please tell me this — where or when exactly did Web 1.0 end, and Web 2.0 began?

Answer:

There is no answer because the web is the result of a gradual evolution of technological development. The meme web 2.0 makes great copy for the computer czars to slog, and an excuse for Tim O’Reilly and his partners to sell more seminars and books.

It’s marketing mumbo-jumbo, and that (as they say folks) is the end of the story. So don’t buy into it (pun intended).

Update $$$: I’ve reconsidered and as I speak I’m working on Web 4.0. The book should be out in about a month and a speaking tour with Guy Kawasaki is in the works this summer. So stay tuned for further details.

P.s.: Tim, you can forget about trying to steal it because it’s already trademarked. Ha!

  1. Every once in awhile a moron comes along who tries to hijack the net. First it was Al Gore and now it’s O’Reilly. Cheeze.

  2. Does that mean I’m not really 39 since I’ve gradually grown older?

    ;)

Web 2.0 isn’t a definitive point in time; however, I believe it is a stage of application and interaction evolution worth defining.

  3. Well then Doug, please answer the question. When exactly did Web 1.0 suddenly become Web 2.0? If you can define it with a name then surely you can also define the time.

And for that matter, on the day before your before birthday were you still only 38, or was it really 38.999?

    Just wondering. ;-)

  4. Hallelujah!

Only I have been a lot more long-winded about it:
