Will Social Networks Destroy Blogging?
Yes possibly, blogging could end as we now know it so long as the trend continues and influential bloggers irresponsibly push social networking sites like Facebook. They’re acting more like opportunists exploiting the latest trend instead of being an example and warning of its limitations and dangers thereof.
Reality Check:
In the long run they’re only cutting their own throats, as well as for the rest of us bloggers. But they don’t seem to care because they follow the money no matter where it leads them.
The blind leading the blind.
We need to keep our perspective. Common sense and past experience tells us new technologies for the sake of technology (despite the coolness factor) isn’t always a good thing.
But that’s just my humble opinion of course … and apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so either.
Keep your eye on the ball and always remember, your blog is the center of your online universe. All the rest is just icing on the cake to bring your readers back to your (real) blog.

You got my vote pardner. I shake my head when I read all the hype out there. Most of it’s just BS.

Agreed, there is so much hype around all the social networking giants but I really dont see what the appeal is, long live blogging!

@BloggingGuide, @James, if used effectively social networks can bring traffic to our blog, but it should not be the other way around. Thanks for your vote.

I dissagree social networks are big threat to blogging. Sure they provide new time consuming tasks (updating status, sharing ideas…) but I think it only affects wannabe bloggers, who post once in a while. Serious and dedicated bloggers will stay and can use social networks and communities to promote their blog. So maybe it’s helping to clear the blog scene of redundant andininspiring blogs.
@Blog Bloke: Nice blog you have here

@Tolma?enje … that’s one way to look at it. Thanks for the kudos.

i personally link back my blog from the social networking zovue and when i add a new blog, all my followers get an update.
Also if i store photos on Zovue.com, and video of my blogs. My followers get an update too! because how else will they know whats new,,,unless they keep checking your blog everyday. and some people just dont have the time, or they forget to check back.
when they get the update, their like…oh yeah…i should read that blog, or see that photo or video.

@Chris, blogging can survive so long as we keep our perspective and leverage the SN’s back to our (real) blog.

Blogging is and always will be the center of the universe. Many of the social networks are adding mini blogs to their sites because they know blogs rule.

@Kris Malena .. amen to that, but unfortunately a lot of newbies are being brainwashed into thinking their Facebook account is the be-end-all because that’s all your hear about these days.

I read many of my friends blog through a link in the Facebook status. And also their comments and updated on others blog. Many of whom I have no idea owns a blog. (but nearly everyone owns a blog) So it’s not so bad a thing after all in my opinion.

I tried Facebook recently and I got sick of it very quickly. It really seems to bring the very worst out in people. They amass a horde of “friends” and they think that they’re celebrities or something! It’s a bit of a fad at the moment but I think people will wake up to it in time and start to get tired of Facebook and similar sites.
Blogging is a far superior medium. You have to do some work when you write a blog. And they are much more useful sources of information.
While blogging may seem threatened by social networks at the moment I think it will weather the storm and come back stronger than ever in the long run.

@Matt Hayden, good points there, and I will add that social networks will continue but their growth will eventually bottom-out for three reasons:
1. There will always be noobs who are looking for an easy, introductory way to get into pseudo-blogging.
2. Users will eventually grow out of the confines of a website and get a real blog of their own.
Hopefully
3. One last thing .. I wonder how many of those new Social Network profiles will be abandoned shortly thereafter? It was the same thing for blogging.

I’m thinking that social networking websites are going to be the new place where blogging is done. Zovue.com, the social networking website, has built in blogging where I can blog jus tlike anywhere else - exceot that I can choose who sees my blog. The same goes for anything on the site - online photo sharing, online video storage, etc. - but for blogging, I want everyone to see my stuff so I set my privacy settings to ‘celebrity’. I agree that there is a lot of waste on most social networking sites that’s why I use Zovue.com because it is a more professional focused social network. As a matter of fact zovue.com is a private social network that gives me the choice of privacy settings.

i think social networking slowly eats blogging since most social networks allows user to blog in the same.

Micro-blogging is great…in it’s place. Even with that said there’s no way it will ever replace blogging. I think if it’s used as a supplement to a person’s actual blog it can be most helpful in driving traffic to your site.

Very interesting and amusing subject. I read with great pleasure.

I think it’s the other way around. I started blogging in Friendster, let’s say it was my training ground.
Now I am getting lots of visitors through Facebook as I manually update my friends every time I have a new post. Also Google and other search engines has tied up with the social networking giants to make the updates available on search results which is favorable for bloggers.
Or maybe I am just too blind to see.

@SPK, I think most of us first cut our teeth on simpler blogging platforms like Blogger, or more recently social networks offering pseudo-blogging tools like Facebook etc.
But as we grow serious bloggers we will see the limitations of social networks and look for a more robust platform like Wordpress. On the other hand I’m sure Facebook is all that some will need.
There is indeed a convergence of software going on and even Wordpress is morphing into a more social environment. It is all very interesting to watch and how it will all end is anybody’s guess.

You’re right on track. Social networks, and all this media 2.0 rage is the real-deal, something to stay for many years to come; what counts is how we [bloggers, marketers, etc] use it: for good, or for evil.

Blogging I think will always be king. Almost every site you come across and see there is always some sort of blog on it, they serve as a place where you can easily post updates about your business and they are visible to anyone you want. I think social bookmarking can help you blog out if you use them right.
