Social Media Parenting

I started a new discussion group on Twitter called Social Media Parenting. I hope you will join us there for topics on parenting kids in a social media world.

Let’s put our collective heads together and figure out how we can teach our kids use social media responsibly. I think it’s an important subject and I’m sure we will come up with some useful strategies that we can all benefit.

In some way I suppose you could say this is me raising the white flag to the Facebook juggernaut. Instead of trying to fight the onslaught (which seems hopeless at this point) I figured I may as well at least try to mitigate the damages.

So I kicked it off with the topic “Parents: What’s Your Facebook Strategy“? Please join the conversation and feel free to add any other topics that weigh on your heart.

Cheers, and see you there!

  1. Just got a brand-new Pearl and I can now read your blog on my phone’s browser, it didn’t get the job done on my aged one.

  2. Hear ya bloke.

Parents should and must look over everything their child talks about. My son is on FB and is doing good and we watch his incoming comments as I have the email account that goes along with it.

My Daughter on the other hand was on FB but she isn’t ready for Social media. We pulled her account.

Parents should have their children login information. Period!

Good for you Curtis. Remember it’s not only about who they friend either. So don’t forget to remind your kids about Zuckerberg’s disregard for their privacy and to be careful what they write. Please join us at our Twitter group too.

  4. Actually - I am cofounder of a site designed to help parents teach their kids about social networking, and to create a cohesive social network of just your family and closest friends (and we’re free!). But as the mom of a teenager, I monitor her facebook and other accounts. But I also enjoy having a place where she can be encouraged to share more with fewer people. And for littler kids, when you join our site, you can designate them children, and they cannot connect with anyone outside of your family account (or be searched) and now you have a place to show them how photo sharing and commenting works in a safe, private place. I’d love for you to check us out and let us know what you think. hatchedit.com. Thanks! Kirsten
