It’s Fine To Talk The Talk, But Bullshit Always Walks

It’s Fine To Talk The Talk, But Bullshit Always Walks

I was gratified to read a post by Chris Brogan the other day titled “An Insider’s Guide to Social Media Etiquette“.

SIDE NOTE: I hadn’t heard of Chris until about a year ago when he was suddenly inaugurated by his fellow marketers as king of all things social.

I don’t normally read posts by marketers, and if you read me regularly you will know why. I’ve been jaded over the years by the legions of internet marketers who game the system for status and profit by pilfering original content from hard working bloggers such as myself.

For some reason the title caught my eye (nice piece of link-bait there Chris) so I checked it out. It was a carefully written piece expousing some good common sense but not a whole lot new there that I hadn’t already known before. But nonetheless a rather fine piece of Content Curation if I may say so.

There was something however that really got my attention, and that was his comment about linking. He said:

“If someone’s work inspires your own post, it’s a nice thing to “hat tip” them with a link to the post that inspired you, somewhere in the post (usually down at the bottom)”

WOW! Chris tore a page right from the Blokester’s own book. This is what I have been saying for years … but coming from a marketer? There is a God after all.

All I can say is I can only hope the words are put into action and that more of his colleagues will take heed, like his friend Darren Rowse for example. Because in my book talking the talk is great, BUT bullshit always walks.

P.s.: Do you think Chris will mind me hotlinking his pic? After all, I already give him a link (and I’m still waiting for mine). Stay humble my friend.

P.s. #2: Apparently somebody (or some people) in the internet marketing business don’t appreciate my opinions. According to my blog host company this blog has been under a sustained SQL Injection Attack since writing this post.  Do you believe in coincidence? Neither do I. Is that REAL enough for you?

  3. I have long been a proponent of linking out to other bloggers, and crediting them with their ideas and posts. Not only is it good etiquette and the right thing to do, it credits the idea to the original source. I believe in giving credit to others who originate ideas, and hoping that the concept of naming sources and giving hat tips becomes the standard blogging practice everywhere.

@Wayne Hurlbert, thanks for the comment ole friend. Linking to sources, hat tipping or whatever else you want to call it was once the norm in blogging netiquette before internet marketers and content curators started brainwashing the net-citizenry that it’s all about I, me, my.
