Santa Makes Telephone Calls

It’s true! We were VOIPed by Santa

I hope all of you had the most excellent of Christmas’s. Over here at the Bloke’s abode we had a wonderful time.

On Christmas Eve we celebrated with just the immediate family singing along with our favorite MP3 Christmas carols on the computer. Then on Christmas day we had the rest of our family over with our closest friends, and a happy time was had for all.

But the real reason for this post is something magical happened that I wanted to share with you (and it is absolutely true).

On Christmas Eve @ around 10pm we were watching Santa’s progress on the NORAD website when we received a telephone call. I answered on the speaker phone and a deep, loud voice bellowed:

“Hello, this is Santa Clause. May I speak to Samantha please?

I replied. “Hello Santa Tim, and a Merry Christmas to you” (Tim is our older son who no longer lives with us).

He answered. “No, this is Santa Claus. May I speak to Samantha please?”

Try as I may to interrogate the person at the other end he would not crack, insisting that he was the real deal. The caller ID was also blocked so I decided to play along with the prank and called for Sam.

When Sam got to the phone he said “Hi Samantha, this is Santa. I’m calling to tell you that I will be arriving at your house soon so I want you to be a good little girl and be in bed before midnight”. (Sam is hard to get to bed early and apparently Santa knew this). Sam promised that she would and we all said our goodbyes.

I thought nothing of it further until later in the early morning hours after everyone was asleep (or so I thought) when I was startled by the sound of my daughter urgently calling me. She was all excited and shouting:

“Daddy, Daddy, this is really important. Please come quickly”. When I came to her room she told me she was positive that she just heard Santa saying “Ho, Ho, Ho” in our living room. She also said that she heard the tinkling sound of the glass of milk that she had left for him.

I played along with it and put her back to sleep as she smiled dreaming of all the presents she knew that would be waiting for her.

At the Christmas dinner table the following day my wife and I interrogated our son Tim about the telephone call from “Santa”. No matter how hard we tried to make him confess he insisted that he did not do it.

Eventually we were convinced that he was telling the truth because what reason would he have to lie to us when it was such a great idea and he wished that he could take the credit for it.

Our telephone number is also unlisted and not many people have it, but none of our friends admitted to making the call either.

But what really made the hair stand on the back of my neck was my wife said she heard Santa in our living room that night too!

Now I’m a believer.
