PC World’s 10 Biggest Hits of All Time
I’m an old fan of PC Magazine when I used to devour it for free at the local food mart while I was waiting for Mom to finish shopping.
In case you don’t know my computing days go back to before anyone had ever heard of Bill Gates or Microsoft. (No I’m not that old, I just started early). My first introduction to my bud Bill is described in my FAQ in case you’re interested.
My earliest computer dreams were of owning a huge, beastly Radio Shack (pre-Tandy desktop model) made up of diodes, transistors, and big ugly glowing lights (no LEDs in those days yet), but I didn’t have the space to put it anywhere.
I remember building an Apple 11 Plus clone (please don’t tell Steve Jobs) and looking at the blinking cursor expecting it to do something. Nobody told me that I needed software.
I also remember having visions of being able to interact with the world from my room and little did I know then that it would become a reality with broadband internet, blogs and podcasting like it is today.
I should have stayed with Apple (hindsight is 20/20) and I’ve cursed every day that I’ve suffered with Windows (albeit admittedly XP is not a bad operating system). Now back to my story.
I took a computer course and learned programming languages such as assembly, basic, and that latest state of the art language called cobol (I feel old just talking about it).
After school I took a job and my company was one of Bill Gate’s first casualties when we were told to go home because all our ‘puters became flying toasters overnight thanks to Billy’s unholy alliance with IBM. You see our computers used the CP/M operating system and the architecture wouldn’t accept DOS. Thanks Bill. Love ya.
So much for nostalgia. Getting back to PC Magazine, this article called “The 10 Biggest PC World Hits of All Time” brought back all of those memories that I thought I would bore you with. Now if I could only get Barbara Striesandout of my head:
