PC World Honours WordPress

WordPress blog software has been awarded the #95 position in PCWorld’s 100 Best Products of the year.

Previously Blogger beat out WordPress for top honors at PC World’s World’s 101 Fabulous Freebies as the best blogging service.

WordPress missed the mark because it “doesn’t support remote blogging“, and offers only 25MB for images. The other reason is “unlike Blogger, Wordpress.com won’t let you edit the template code–you’re stuck with its options.”

Ditto. That’s why I haven’t moved over (yet). Besides, I hate off-the-shelf templates. Who wants to look like everybody else? Plus there is only limited plugin support making it less robust than the downloadable version. Using hacks with Blogger I can do more so it will have to suffice for now.

Aimed at ‘younger audiences’ LiveJournal, MySpace, and Xanga Classic came in last:

Our favorite service is Blogger. The first major free blogging tool (launched in 1999), Blogger stays ahead of the game by remaining incredibly convenient to use and by offering a rich complement of features. If you have a Web server, you can use Blogger to publish your Weblog via FTP. But we like the easy way: hosting the blog on Blogspot. In about 5 minutes, we were able to create a blog, pick an appealing design, and start posting. Uploading images is a simple process, and the service supplies a generous 300MB of photo storage.

Blogger is especially friendly to mobile bloggers. Can’t get access to a computer easily? Send a picture or a text message from your phone to a special SMS address, and up it goes. Blogger’s Audioblogger service even offers voice blogging: Just call a special number, enter a code, and say your piece. Blogger converts the sound of your voice (up to 5 minutes’ worth) into an audio file and posts it for all to hear.

The downloadable software version of WordPress is of course more robust and configurable, providing that you don’t mind the headache of setting it up or hosting. No pain no gain they say.

But I’m still waiting to see if the WordPress online service will roll out more features (like they keep promising) before I decide to commit.
