a-squared also offers a command-line scanner - another edition of its free malware remover. I did a little research only to find out that command-prompt tools are on the decline ;( Vexira and DrWeb offer command-line virus scanners for businesses only, so I didn't have a chance to test them.

I have had 2 viruses by simply browsing to web pages (i.e. not from email attachments etc...)
Also the free AVG found viruses that Norton did not. I think AVG is fab.

Hi there, I've just written and published two guides on AVG and Spybot S&D. These were actually authorised by the companies themselves.

As these are such great programs, its my aim to help others use them and ensure they are running effectively and efficiently -hence writing the guides.

You can view or downlaod both guides here:
www.spotmoonpc.com/downloads

Thanks,
Michael Cina

Hi Raconteur. After mentioning that you live in the middle east I guess you could say hackers are the online equivalent of real-world terrorists.

Just to mention that despite having a router which is a good thing, you should still use zonealarm's free firewall because software firewalls check both inbound and outbound traffic. Which is especially useful checking for those nasty trojans.

Good tip on using gmail.

Very important tips Bloke.

About 4 years ago, I had a virus from a website hijack my pc and I ended doing a format of the hard drive. The bad thing was I just formated and installed everything a month earlier.

I bought a wireless router about 2 years ago when I purchased a laptop. I like the firewall on it.

Kinda off the subject. What do think about WP 2.5?

<em>Curtis's last blog post..<a href='http://growingthumbs.com/2008/03/15/my-bloggers-bloom-day-march/' rel="nofollow">My Bloggers Bloom Day, March</a></em>

Oooh. An addendum... I just dropped by at Shieldsup and I'm suddenly VERY impressed with my nifty router. Lookit what it says:

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

...my computer is a ninja.

1. AVG and Spybot (I'm using the registry locker that comes with S&D, assuming it won't cause issues - and it hasn't so far - with AVG). Thassit. Also, my connection comes through a gateway, which I believe has (or it should, if it's any good) a firewall built into it.

2. There was one really bad infection a couple of years ago that totaled my father's PC, which, despite my best efforts, forced a format. I hate. Hate. Hate, having to format and reinstall. They're going to have to come up with a decent way of doing that without losing the data that you're formatting over, and partitions really aren't good enough. If format/reinstall was easier, I'd do it every month, just to keep windows from collecting lard and clogging up.

3. I really don't do much, mostly because I've had such an easy time of it. Being in the Middle East, I suppose not a lot of people are interested in giving me a headache, for some odd reason, I doubt I've ever been consciously targetted by a hacker. A word about emails though... I make it a point to not use POP based email, and directly download into a client on my PC. I much prefer to let gmail do the work of filtering everything into the spam so I don't have to worry about things that I've not even read yet but are in my PC somewhere. You can always save whatever you want from your webmail onto your HD later though, so I don't see it as much of a sacrifice.

PS: Welcome back, Bloke.
