Morgan Stanley Sees Money in Blogs

Morgan Stanley’s Internet Analyst Says Hottest Things on the Web are RSS, Blogs and Yahoo

They’re finally starting to get it. In a new research report, Mary Meeker writes that the inclusion of RSS syndicated news feeds in Yahoo’s My Yahoo page is playing a key role in driving blog readership and RSS usage. More readers translate into more advertising revenue opportunities, she reasons.

Ultimately, Meeker wonders whether Yahoo could “accept smaller payments for access to certain content” and split the fees with blog publishers. Inserting ads into syndicated news feeds, as Weblogs Inc. has begun doing with Engadget, is another option, she said. You can download the Meeker report in Adobe Acrobat format here.

Yahoo increased its support for RSS on Wednesday by adding feeds of its news searches in the syndication format. Jacob Rosenberg, writing on Yahoo’s Search blog, adds some tips on creating searches to “make very focused queries, (and) you can do some really cool stuff.” You can read it here.

  1. This report is exactly right on a few accounts. Mary is right that Yahoo is really driving acceptance of RSS feeds into the general marketplace. The average internet users has not a clue what a RSS feed is, but Yahoo makes all that somewhat transparent and very easy for people to put the feeds of their choice right on the homepage.

The other angle that she really does not tap into is how blogs and RSS Feeds can really drive a companies business if they use the blog properly for business, and how the feed really creates a loyal “user” of the publishers content.

It will take a year for businesses to “get it”. Just my 2 cents worth. The smart marketers are using this angle already.

You’re exactly right Rodney, which is why the Bloke is contributing to a new ebook on the topic. Stay tuned to an Amazon.com near you…
