Another Blogger Arrested in Malaysia
Malaysian authorities have arrested another blogger for allegedly insulting the Police. Huh? Maybe he should apologize for hurting their feelings.
Can you believe it? Reading this article I was reminded of the time when I was fired as a journalist from the major newspaper (the Star) because I was apparently too “dangerous” for speaking my mind. Time and again I was warned by my editor ”you can’t say that“. I guess I’m a bad listener.
I’ve been in meetings with Lawyers and seen them cower and shut the door during discussions with them. Some of their more outspoken colleagues have disappeared in the middle of the night never to be heard from again. There are ears everywhere and you never know who is going to rat you out.
Fortunately for me I was friends with a Police official at the time. It helps to know people in high places. ;-)
My wife and child are currently visiting in Malaysia as I write this post. I guess it’s a good thing that I didn’t travel with them or my luck might have run out. The sooner they get home the better as far as I’m concerned.
It really makes you think doesn’t it? If you are living in the west thank your lucky stars that you can still speak your mind. Or at least we can for now.
Whatever you do, don’t take your freedoms for granted. Little by little we are seeing our own privileges erode away, until one day we could wake up to find … well you can fill in the rest.
