How to Lose Comments and Traffic Without Even Trying

By Blog Bloke April 19th, 2007 | 6 Comments Buzz thisBuzz it Share this on Facebook

Not long ago the Bloke had to go into the hospital for an operation. Around that time I was also forced to upgrade to New Blogger, meaning I had to build a new template from scratch. Consequently regular posting was interrupted and I went a few weeks without posting much.

Just prior to that time the InstaBLOKE community was never better. Comments were coming in droves, traffic was surpassing record levels and life was peachy keen.

BUT after the blog was back up and ready to roll, where were the comments? What happened to the traffic? Where did they all go? Apparently everywhere else but here.

This was not the first time this has happened. I have had several health problems over the past few years that were serious enough to interrupt regular posting, and each time was the same.

Stop posting for awhile and it’s who the hell is (or was) Blog Bloke. It was back to square one again and rebuild.

So learn from a lesson that was earned the hard way. If you want to lose readers then just stop posting. It’s that simple. People are fickle and want to be where the action is.

Alternatively, if you want to develop a thriving community post often and keep the momentum going or they will move on. There will always be another blog out there that is more than happy to take your readers.

It’s no wonder the larger blogs will have a guest blogger during their absence. They know what I’m talking about.

    1. I’ve just been away filming for a week, didn’t use any guest bloggers, didn’t set up WordPress to drip feed posts in my absence and yet I’ve not noticed any difference to my traffic or number of comments.

Then again, I never had either in the first place…Ho hum…

    2. God how I miss that wonderful sense of humor. Mike, let that humor come out more often on your blog and I’m sure things will pick up.

    3. You won’t be coming off my feed reader, BB, I can assure you.

Sorry to hear about your recent “slump”, but it seems you have been through a not-so-merry hell. Everything you’ve been through, and that hideous experience your wife had stepping on a needle. How is she, by the way?

Wishing you all the best, and I’ll keep up with your writing.

    4. Glad to hear you’re still there Rory. I thought maybe you hadn’t forgiven me over Liz. ;-) I miss the humor. Between yourself, Mike, Kuanyin and me we could get quite a party going.

    5. Nothing to worry about there, BB. I’m sorry you had such a hard time over that - and the timing couldn’t have been more aggravating for you.

My question about your wife was a serious one - I hope everything is alright for you and yours.

    6. Well….I’m still here! But I didn’t even know you back then either! I’d be honored if you ever want to guest blog for me while I’m away…and you might have fun being even onrier than you already are on mine. On the other hand, I don’t know if you’d want to let me near your blog…it might never be the same. :-)
