The Great Google Friend (dis)Connect

The Great Google Friend (dis)Connect

Widgets.

You gotta love them. They can tell your readers the local weather in your home town. Play tunes when we click on your blog and show-off members of your community. The trouble is when they blink your blog can go poof!

Since yesterday my blog has been down and I spent hours debugging (and bugging my ISP and blog host provider). I checked with Host Tracker, pinged myself and so forth. But nothing seemed to pin it down.

Then my host provider (Saran at HexaHost) said something that clicked (literally). He suggested checking scripts running on my blog and I remembered him complaining before about Google Friend Connect being a nuisance on the server-side.

So I thought “what the heck” and I got out my trusty pencil eraser, commented out the script … and lo and behold all is well again.

The funny thing is it mostly affected Internet Explorer. Way-to-go Microsoft (and shame on you Google).

Google Friend Connect has now been disconnected. Have you noticed the same problem? Care to share your story?

    1. I’ve been hearing about the Google friend Connect problem all morning.

I guess sometimes it’s a good idea to keep widgets to a minimum.

@Jaffer, this isn’t the first time it’s been a problem so I guess it’s gone for good. One less script to worry about and besides, the blog loads faster now.

    2. LOL… I can’t help but think that Google did it on purpose. Being able to create the largest search engine in the world but not being able to properly code a widget. Don’t buy it!

I’m glad though that you’re up and running again.

      [ Reply..]

@Mikael, the cynic in me was thinking the same thing. The more that the web is becoming an operating system, the more Microsoft and Google are competitors.

Is it just a coincidence Google Friend Connect messed up Internet Explorer? Let me think on that ;-)

    3. Was it a specific version of IE? I just loaded my site on IE with google friend connect without any problem.

      [ Reply..]

Erica, I was testing with IE 6 under the Maxthon shell. It’s not that I’m gung-ho on IE, but a large portion of my readers still use it and it’s important that the blog works well in all of the browsers.
