Google Censors Chinese Bloggers
Instead of the Chinese building a wall around their country, why don’t we build a firewall around China?
It seems that Google has forgotten it’s mandate to “do no evil”. Bloggers are appalled with Google’s decision (and rightly so) to censor Chinese bloggers and trash principles for profits.
On the other hand, others have pointed out that at least Google has compromised somewhat and not been so draconian as Yahoo did when it finked out users to the Chinese police or to outright censorship as Microsoft does.
So what can we do about it? Boycott Google? Sound improbable? Well someone has. Blogger News Network has dumped Google ads on its site.
“As a news organization with aspirations to earning public trust, BNN must act ethically in its financial dealings. Accepting money from a company which is putting profit above its ethical obligations to stakeholders would represent a lapse in that ethical stance.BNN would like nothing more than to resume running Google’s AdSense advertisements. On the day when Google announces that it will make its services available in China only in conformance with democratic and freedom-oriented values, we will happily resume our business relationship with Google.”
Fat chance. So here’s an idea. Instead of the Chinese building a wall around their country, why don’t we build a firewall around China? It would server them right.
I realize that I said that with my tongue in my cheek, but really — why not. They’re already being censored so they won’t miss much.
A billion Chinese may be too big a temptation for corporations to ignore, but we are helping them become an economic superpower (4th largest in the world right now).
Corporate greed is sabotaging our future security. Does it make sense to help them build bigger and badder nukes to lob on our heads? Remember, they are also allies with North Korea.
But we have a trump card with our technology. If they want access to the net then we should be forcing them to come to our terms instead of corporate greed caving in to theirs.
No country can survive without technology and trade. We brought the Soviets to their knees economically. It worked before. Why not now?
There outta be a law.

Good idea, but unfortunately corporate greed and profits always win out.

When the president and vice-president are corporate hogs themselves, don’t hold your breath about the law part. I concur with your observations.
