Bush: "I would move Heaven and Earth"
Most of us have heard yesterdays’ press conference by the President. Until now I have avoided the fray, partly because of health reasons, but more importantly because I wasn’t certain where I stood on the matter.
I consider myself a nonpartisan. I do not subscribe to the rhetoric of the right or the left, but rather the politics of reason and common sense. Yesterday I saw a man who showed no pomp or pretense. In other words (being the geek that I am) I see Bush as a ‘What You See Is What You Get’ type of president.
Many have lambasted Bush, calling him common and un-polished. BUT I see that as one of his strengths. I for one am sick of slick politicians that smirk, smooze and skirt (pun intended a la Clinton) around the issues.
So, are we to believe the liberal rhetoric that Bush knew there were no WMD’s in Iraq, and that he intentionally started a war based on a lie. Well then, let’s look at that ‘logic’ a little closer shall we?
Think about it. Put your preconceived notions aside for a moment and REALLY think about it. So let’s assume that Bush lied and sent us to war knowing that he would have egg on his face this coming election. And he’s also a heartless bastard who just doesn’t care. Hmmmm. Ok, if that’s the case then the Democrats ought to be thanking him for handing over the White House rather than an inquisition. One heck of a gamble wasn’t it? Enough to gamble a presidency on? I don’t think so.
So do I agree with the war in Iraq? I still believe it is a war about oil more than anything else. There’s a million Saddams out there, but only one who sat on a huge oil field, AND who was capable of disrupting the balance of power in the Middle East and world economics. Yes I believe it is a war about politics, economics and big-business interests more than anything else. BUT do I believe Bush lied about the Weapons of Mass Destruction? No I do not.
I’m convinced that he really believed (based upon the information he was privy to) that Saddam had WMD’s. That was the hook - his justification for starting the war. Was it the only reason that he went to Iraq? No, of course not. BUT he couldn’t have lied about the WMD’s or he is the biggest nincompoop that ever graced the White House. He isn’t all that slick, BUT neither is he that stupid.
911 - we all need a scapegoat to appease our pain. So why not Georgey? After all, he’s the guy in charge. He should have known those whackos were going to take down the Twin Towers, and with one fell swoop forever change our world. Right?
So did Bush know enough to prevent the disaster? I haven’t seen anything SPECIFIC yet - have you… really? I challenge anyone to prove me otherwise and I will be the first to admit that I’m wrong. I see a lot of general information. Yes, they heard vague, random chatter indicating something was going to happen. BUT did they know specifically that an airplane would be slammed into the Towers on that specific day? Shades of Pearl Harbour! Well I haven’t heard anything that would lead me to that conclusion - YET. Bush stated that he would “move Heaven and Earth” if he could change what happened that day, and somehow I believe him.
DOES that I mean I agree with his policies? No, at least not always, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until PROVEN otherwise. And if I hear any concrete evidence to the contrary I will be the first to demand that he step down.
That having been said, what I find really disgusting is how anybody can be so crass as to portray the president as a monster just to win an election. Especially those who would dare to use the ‘V’ word. What little respect I might have had for Edward Kennedy et al has been forevermore washed down the proverbial poop shoot. Swoosh. Here is the full transcript…
Now, regarding Cheney - that’s worthy of another discourse.
