Has Blogger turned into a Free Lunch?

Ok it’s time to rant. Am I the only one who’s noticed that more ‘blogpreneurs’ are using Blogger as a free medium for advertising products and services?

No, I’m not talking about business-related blogs. Let me explain. Perusing the “Next Blog” link (at the top right-hand corner of the NavBar) I came across several blogs that are nothing more than cheap advertisements hawking their wares. In fact I seem to have found more of them than legitimate blogs.

For example, one blog (I refuse to link to them) is nothing more than gobs of advertisements with links to products such as video games and computer gadgets. Another blog is just an advertisement for online gaming. And another merely advertises web hosting (I haven’t found the blog porn yet but I’m sure it’s out there).

There seems nothing wrong with that - right? The problem is there is absolutely no worthwhile content written on these blogs whatsoever! They are nothing but free billboards to hawk their wares.

So what the bloody hell is going on here? I’m trying to find other notable bloggers and all that I’m getting is spam, spam, spam (as you read this imagine a shrill Monty Python overdub).

Hasn’t anybody else noticed this or am I just another voice crying in the wilderness? Has the Blogger community become nothing more than a free lunch for snake oil pedlars, scam artists and pimps? Crikey I hope not.

Yes, blogs can be used for business and Blog Bloke has been a big proponent of that. Trying me best to give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps these people aren’t aware that the content of the blog comes first, then the product - and not the other way around.

But then again, maybe they do.
