Your Blog is Your Online Resume, Brochure and Business Card

When I’m looking for work all too often I’m asked for my resume.  When that happens I just smile and say I haven’t made a resume in years.  Then I point them to my blog and say “there … that is my resume”.   And when I tell them I also do the design, coding and writing they are sold on the spot.

Yes, I get clients just by referring them to my blog.  There is no better resume, brochure or business card for building a reputation than a good (and real) blog.

Why?  Because it takes a little more effort and talent to create a great blog in comparison to only having a social network page for example.

When I say “real” I don’t mean a pseudo-blog or page on a social network like Facebook or Google Plus.  I’m talking about a real blog that is on a real blog platform such as Wordpress and Blogger (Wordpress preferred).

What got me thinking about writing this post was when I visited the webpage of a social media ‘expert’ and it was only a background pic with no content … only a couple of  links to social networks.

It also got me thinking about the so-called pro bloggers who will tell you that a blog is only about curating content and tricking readers into joining their email list for the upsell.  The problem with that strategy is the ethics can be shady. (Click on the ‘blog ethics’ and ‘content curation’ links below for more info.)

If you are in this game for the long haul then your integrity should be important to you and I don’t recommend any method of blogging that may put your integrity at risk.  There are better ways to make money blogging without sacrificing your ethics.

The bottom line is your blog is your online brochure, resume and business card all wrapped into one for showcasing your talents, knowledge, experience and getting new business.

Believe me it works.

When it comes to making money in social media slick talk and tricks only go so far.  Show them something that’s for real.  Get a real blog and make it into something great.

  1. I hear ya. I’m working on my site so I can get more clients. Been kinda slow lately. I’m not sure about not having a business card though. I think it is important to give to someone in passing, just to make sure that they get to your blog at some point.

Seems kind of unprofessional to write the name of the blog out on a napkin. Not saying that this is what you do, but I just wanted to point out that business cards are still relevant. At least I think they are.

I do agree with your other points though. Good post.

Hi Josh. I didn’t mean to give the impression we should dispense with business cards etc. Just saying a blog is your online version of all those … and much more. Thanks for your comments and helping me to clarify that.

  2. Do you mind if I quote a couple of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your
webpage? My blog site is in the very same niche as yours and my users would certainly benefit from some of the information you present here.
Please let me know if this ok with you. Thanks!

Sure, but please read this first and remember the following guidelines:

    1. So long as you are NOT using my quotes to make money off your blog.

    2. Use blockquote formatting that separates the quotes from the rest of the post. This usually indents the quote and prints it in italics with a different colour background.

    3. Following the quote there MUST be a link clearly stating the quote is by Blog Bloke and a link to http://www.blogbloke.com.
