Your Blog 101 Assignment for Today

Good day …

Today is going to be a very short lesson:

Your assignment will be to write a blog post, and it needs to be done within two days.

Class dismissed!

I don’t know about you, but if I had anyone telling me to do something within a specific time period and without giving any kind of definition or direction, I would be in total confusion!  I would be in such a dither I would end up running for the hills, because I just can’t do it!

YET…..

Blog Post Entry: Insert Here

All too often this is what we do to ourselves when we have a blog. We put ourselves into these impossible situations not knowing what to write, and then wonder why we have so many problems keeping our blog active!

It is so much easier to go back to just tweeting interesting snippets. It is more satisfying to have these great discussions on other social networks (choose any network you want) and (of course) it is really important to talk to that person on Skype or Gtalk about the problem they were having!

We end up blaming social networking and social media for being such a time waster, for not doing what we were supposed to be doing, which is to write that blog post. The fact is we can make social networking work for us with a simple change in our thinking, and so … I am  going to change today’s blog assignment to:

You are to find a tweet that you found interesting, a discussion that you have been having on any of the social networks, or one chat that you have had with a person on Skype, Gtalk etc., and then turn it into a blog post.

Class dismissed – Oh, and before you go are there any questions?

  1. I do this myself. When I get a good rant going my blog post is already half written. :-)

    @BLOGBloke, good coffee :-)

I have known more than a few people who do exactly what you say…the infamous “rant” post and it is amazing how fast they can be written.
I have also known people who are “afraid” of doing these kinds of posts, because they don’t feel right in exposing themselves or hurting other people or or or….

There are many reasons why we should be using social media in a better way…first and foremost, because we can continue the conversations or snippets we share (or have been shared with) on our home front..our blog, which should be our priority, otherwise…why have a blog at all?

  2. Most of my post on the blog are just that - written as soon as an idea pops up. I have written and discarded many drafts that way.

You are right, I do need a goal, a direction to what I am doing.

I’ll do that right away… right after dinner … I mean tv… chocolate smoothie…ironing… maybe tomorrow.

@Jaffer, good morning - chocolate smoothie? too funny!

You are right though, we always have ideas and then go - I will get to it just as soon as I ( fill in the blank)

I believe it is called organizing ourselves and for me (personally) that is easier said than done so I have full understanding.

I do believe, that far too often we use our social media efforts in a way that can take away from our blogging efforts instead of using it to help us and that was the intent to this “lesson”.

    I think I need a coffee now…..

  3. Love it! You always nudge me in the right direction. Focus. Define. Narrow down. Set your parameters. Tighten up, not spread out. Chasing rabbits is a frustrating occupation. Finding a topic that pushes a button will make a blog post come alive.

@Dorothy Sander, I love that wording, well said Dorothy and yes finding the button to push one into an action is always needed

  4. I do something kinda similar. I try to ask myself a question about something I don’t know then go out and see what’s there, learn about it, experiment with it, then write about it
