Who Are You Calling Arrogant? Setting the Record Straight

As hard as it is to believe sometimes I am accused of being arrogant. Like I told my friend Diane, to be sure I can be opinionated at times and I may come across as being a little confidant. Some have also called me cocky, but I prefer the word passionate.

So yes, I will agree with that assessment to a certain extent and you will get no argument from me. But does that make me “arrogant“?

Hmm .. well let me answer that first with a little background information.

What got me thinking about this was my radio show last night with Wayne Hurlbert when we were talking about a-listers and backslapping cretens amongst other things.

All too often I come across so-called gurus out there who think they are really hot stuff. They are always bragging on themselves and seeking the limelight. You know who they are.

Well I’m tired of reading all the propaganda and maybe it’s time that I set the record straight. So let’s compare credentials shall we:

  1. I worked in the computer industry before anybody had heard of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.
  2. I was a pioneer in blogging and foresaw the future potential of blogging and social media before those other gurus had even heard of the term.
  3. I coded my RSS feeds from scratch before they came built-into blogs and shared my knowledge free of charge with fellow bloggers.
  4. I was the first to blog about blogging and created the Blog Tips niche.
  5. I designed, coded and built this blog from the ground up without any help.
  6. Even all of the graphics you find on this theme are my own design that I created in Photoshop from scratch.
  7. I have written numerous technical tutorials that are completely original that nobody else had written or been able to figure out.
  8. There is a lot more I could mention but I don’t want to be accused of bragging. (^_^)

So how many of those so-called gurus do you know can say the same?

Give up? Ok I’ll tell you — nada, zero, none come close to my knowledge, credentials and accomplishments. That speaks for itself.

Most if not all of those expert “gurus” are only marketers who copied or outsourced all of the hard stuff to the real experts.

The only thing they can really boast about is they are good at grabbing the limelight for themselves.

BraggartSo by comparing myself to them does that make me a braggart? Well I guess you could accuse me of that, but I would just say I’m proud of my accomplishments more than anything else.

When you consider that social media is all about popularity and “influence”, sadly .. tooting one’s own horn seems to be an accepted practice (if not an obligation) nowadays.

They call it marketing.

At least I haven’t been as obnoxious about it as them. I waited all this time to finally set the record straight.

So getting back to the original question — am I really arrogant? Well perhaps I can come across as being a little arrogant. But I don’t think I’m nearly as bad as those other popularity-seeking “gurus“.

At least I can back up what I say, and I don’t need a BS Klout score or gagillians of phony followers to do it either.

Why did I write this?

I’ve been asking myself should all this nonsense really be necessary. I mean, I thought we left this immature attitude behind us when we finished high school.

Apparently the “gurus” out there disagree and seem to think it is necessary. After all, they are the ones who made up the rules. Not me.

But I still think I’m a nice guy, or at least I like to think I am. So go ahead and reach out and touch me. I won’t bite.

Hah!

  1. Reaching out and touching you….lol ( wasn’t there a song that said that?)

Don’t ya love how people can twist words and make something good into a question mark? hmmmm

When we look at the definition of “arrogant” which as an adjective means having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities ( I found that definition btw through a very fast google search), I have to be blunt and honest..you are NOT arragont, but yes you have very strong opinions. The funny thing about opinions and especially in your case…you state from the heart, but more important you state your thoughts through hard learned experience and that to ME is what sets you apart from others.

On the other hand I still see a Guru as a spiritual teacher and sorry if one is preaching marketing..that is so NOT spiritual and is rather insulting to those who are indeed into the matters of spirit, heart and mind.

You are you and I am so damn proud and a little humbled to say that I can count on you as a real friend who is honest, who is ethical and one who can share humor, a love of music and a man who is credible…

As Forest Gump said… ” and that is all I have to say about that”!!

@Blog Bloke (BB), hmmm chocolate and coffee go hand in hand… lol

On a serious note ( kind of) This was easy to comment as it is how I feel and what I know.

Ya there are always going to be those arrogant people who call themselves gurus leading people down the garden path and ya there will be those who will feed their egos by following them etc. - the fact is that is the way of the world..funny thing about “false prophets” they tend to fall down and go boom after a while and people shake their heads at their silliness at listening to them.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I always regret getting sucked into clicking their link bait titles. Waste of my time.

  2. Sigh, I would NEVER call anybody “arrogant” in the public stream. I read you because of your tech POV, I don’t always agree with your stance on marketers but think that we disagree civilly & I quite enjoy chatting with you on Facebook.

One thing, an observation made here because I do like you! You seem angry a lot of the time & that saddens me, what good is doing all this if you can’t get tons of joy from it?

    Hugs to you :)

Hi @Jean and thank you for honoring me in my corner of the web.

“I would NEVER call anybody arrogant in the public stream” .. BUT what about to yourself ;-)

Heh, yes we have had some interesting exchanges on Facebook but as you know Zuck’s place isn’t on my priority list.

I admit that I can be very passionate about certain topics. After all I am half Irish. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

I have a lot of friends who are marketers and it’s only the sleazy ones who get me going. I realize that my passion can sometimes come across as anger and that is why I try to inject a little humor to soften the blow.

I’m not always successful in that endeavor and I will try better next time.

    Cheers!

@Jean Parks, just thought I would add my Canadian two cents… I will admit that at one time (tee hee) crotchety was a word I would use for BB, but after time, I have to say that anyone who can eat peanut butter and drink coffee at the same time AND still have a “voice” is a comedian….lol.

If there was a single word that I would use for Blogbloke it would be “passionate” and Bb’s “voice” comes across in that manner, at times frustrated no doubt, but always and I do mean always, BB is consistent in what he has and wants to tell people.

I guess it is a matter of opinion as to whether a person can keep getting a message across and still have humor and be “positive” all the time, I know for my own experience…it’s not so easy.

He is a good man and that is all I know and all I really need to know and that is my opinion on this…. Back to my own cup of coffee and having a good day…take care of you Jean and hope we can talk about many subjects as time allows…..
